In March 1999, Poland officially joined the NATO Alliance – the military alliance numbering 30 countries. The alliance was established in the United States in April, 1949 and member states agreed to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

In 1955, as a reaction to the NATO Alliance, Eastern European countries established a similar alliance called the Warsaw Pact the purpose of which was to contain the influence of the United States, to create a counterweight to NATO and to increase the Eastern European countries’ influence in Europe and Asia. However, after the implosion of the Soviet Union and the break-up of the Warsaw Pact, in the years 2004-2009 .some of the Eastern European countries – Poland, Hungary, Czechia  and the Baltic States – joined NATO
