The article by Miri PAZ, “The soil soaked with blood”, devoted to Jedwabne’s affair. In the introduction, the journalist describes her visit to the Institute of National Memory, showing the independence of this institution and the seriousness in the research initiated by it, especially the one concerning Jedwabne’s slaughter. She quotes the director of the Institute, Prof. Kieres who explains that he gave himself to Jedwabne’s affair because “every nation should know not only bright but also dark parts of its history.” Paz describes the reactions of the national rightists to this “dark part of the history” as well as the behaviors of Jedwabne’s inhabitants.

The second part of the article relates the conversation with Anna Bikont, the author of the book “We, from Jedwabne”, about her work on this book, about the meetings with Jedwabne’s inhabitants as well as about anti-Semitism.
 

„Yayn vegurme” (“Wine and the gourmet”), May 2005

Miri Paz’s article about restaurants in Cracow managed by Suzana Mrozek, wife of the famous writer and playwright Slawomir Mrozek. Paz presents one of the restaurants, “Wentzel”, recommended to her by her French acquaintances. She praises its excellent cuisine, describes its interior design and interesting paintings from the School of Paris on the restaurant’s walls. The journalist mentions also the great tradition of the Polish cuisine which, according to her, equals the French or the Italian one. She encourages all the readers to visit “Wentzel” restaurant when in Cracow.

Miri Paz’s article, “The Polish Paradox”. The journalist presents to the reader Anna Bikont’s book “We, from Jedwabne”, proposed for the NIKE Prize. She writes about difficulties the creation of the book encountered, vicissitudes in connection with its writing, and about how the controversy around it divided the Polish society.

In the second part of the article, “History doesn’t rest”, Paz describes continuous discoveries and documentation of new facts concerning the past of Poland, amongst others the “transfer” of a great group of Poles from Suwalki’s region by the Soviets. The affair was discovered, searched through during the last years, and is now described in a book, by Polish radio journalist Alicja Maciejowska. This murder is also attended by the Institute of National Memory which, as Paz writes, disposes in its archives of some 80 kg of documents concerning soviet murders.

The third part of the article, “I like Polish literature”, is devoted to the International Translators’ Congress, organized by the Book Institute in Cracow. Paz, who is also Polish literature translator, shares her impressions from meetings with translators, writes about the Transatlantic Prize winner, as well as about the position of the Polish literature in Germany.

Miri Paz’s conversation with Leszek Kwiatkowski, translator of Hebrew literature into Polish. Kwiatkowski made an outstanding translation of the last Amos Oz’s novel “A tale of Love and Darkness”, he tells Paz about his work, about his fascination with the Hebrew language and about similarities between Polish and Israeli readers.

Account about the study visit in Poland organized by the Polish Institute and by the Centre of Holocaust Teaching “Mashmaut” in cooperation with Polish institutions in Poland. Authors of the account explain that the trip was a continuation of two year educational program called “Under Shared Sky”, supervised by the Polish Institute’s educational coordinator Yaron Karol Becker, within the framework of which best lecturers from Poland were invited to the “Mashmaut” Centre. The article underlines a very professional level of trip organization, rich tourist and educational program led by the elite of the Polish lecturers; it also says that the members of the study trip enjoyed very warm reception by the Polish organizers and educational teams.
