The Animation Theatre presents ‘Musical Box’ at the International Puppet Theatre Festival in Jerusalem
11 – 13 August

The plot is simple: focussed on a couple whose lives are dominated by work – they spend more time buried in their tools of trade than with their child, resulting in constant arguments. The only thing that can bring them back together is the long lost sound of a music box which once filled their home with joy. Will the little boy’s ingenuity help to fix the broken down mechanism?

Established in 1945, this famous Poznan puppet theatre has virtually become a Polish institution. Its high standard of artistic performance has been confirmed by the numerous awards and prizes received both by the entire team and by its individual members at national festivals and presentations. The theatre makes use of both classic pieces and contemporary Polish and foreign literature. Premiere of the Polish-Jewish musical ‘The Magician from Lublin’ at the Yiddishpiel Theatre
September - October

Fresh from a successful European tour, the Polish producers of a musical based on Isaac Bashevis Singer’s ‘The Magician from Lublin’ come to Israel to collaborate with Tel Aviv’s ‘Yiddishpiel’ theatre actors. The plot revolves around a Jewish magician and acrobat torn between earthly pleasures (among others, his five mistresses) and spiritual life. Szurmiej’s play features Brechtian songs whose lyrics were based on Chassidic tradition. The musical score ranges from a choir singing to moving solo performances which lay bare the inner world of the characters.

This outstanding production benefits from the contributions of a number of distinguished professionals from the world of Polish theatre:  director and choreographer Jan Szurmiej; renowned composer of theatrical and orchestral music, Zygmunt Konieczny; veteran stage designer Wojciech Jankowiak; and costume designer Marta Hubka.
