of a few persons – "the Master" who makes a living practicing his
knife-throwing skills, a young prostitute and a homeless harmonica
player. In order to earn their keep, they join forces and set up an
itinerant circus. The heroes' mutual relations lead to the discovery

The hero of this criminal comedy is a friendly cab driver by the
name of Jurek Kiler who is identified by Commissioner Ryba as a most
dangerous contract killer and, consequently, lands behind bars. The
shy, lost and, at times, funny nogoodnik is suddenly viewed as a
killer of international fame. He is quickly released from prison

- the boss of the capital's mob.

A psychological-moral drama that reveals the behind-the-scenes work
and life of police officers of the Warsaw Police Department homicide
division. The story has a few plots and focuses on the fates of five
police officers working in one section. They are united by
professional solidarity and often friendship. They constantly face
choices that sometimes bring them dangerously close to crossing over
to the other side of the law.
"Tomorrow's

English sub.)

common language with his wife and children. Some other man is
calling the shots at home, the son is joined politics, his older
daughter is a reality show star and his younger daughter divides her

I Am,
dir. Dorota Kedzierzawska (Polish, Subtitles in English, 96 min)
July, 10, at 20.00
July, 11, at 15:00
An 11-year-old boy runs away from the orphanage where he lives and
comes to his mother’s house where he discovers her in the arms of a
tattooed stranger. He runs away once again, and, without wallowing
in self-pity, decides to build a life for himself, despite the
hostile environment that surrounds him. He finds shelter on an
abandoned rusty riverboat, sells scrap metal for pennies and tries
to avoid all contact with the homeless and glue-sniffing gangs. In a
nearby villa, a young girl looks out on him, and with time the
disparate worlds of the two come together.
I Am is driven neither by cheap psychology nor by
in-your-face social criticism. Dorota Kedzierzawska, who based the
script for her film on an item she read in the newspaper, spares her
viewers the sentimentality and exaggerated feelings of despair that
would have robbed the film of its honest and emotional sting.
Rather, she chooses to manipulate our emotions by purely cinematic
means – from the realistic dimension that constantly emphasizes the
particular reality in which the plot functions, to the absolute
opposite: the wise use of symbolism and fairy tale atmosphere that
envelops the viewer.

Ode to Joy,
dir. Anna Kazejak- Dawid, Jan Komasa, Maciej Migas (Polish,
Subtitles in English, 110 min)
July, 15, at 15.45
Silesia:
Aga returns to the mining province and finds herself stuck at home
with her striking father and her beautician mother, who is also out
of work because the salon where she worked closed. With her savings,
Aga purchases a beauty parlor for her mother, but it is destroyed
during the miners’ demonstrations. When the strike is broken, Aga
decides to return to London.
Warsaw: In the big city, ambitious hip-hop artist Peras is
seeing Marta, whose wealthy father firmly opposes her seeing the
unknown musician. Taking advantage of a crisis in their
relationship, the father tries to persuade his daughter to go to
London.
Pomerania: After completing his studies, Wiktor returns to
the fishing village where he grew up, but little awaits him in the
coastal province. In the end of the film he is on a bus to London,
along with the protagonists of the previous two episodes.
Statistics reflect that at least 300,000 young people have emigrated
from Poland in recent years. Each of the three filmmakers of Ode
to Joy, fresh graduates of the Lodz Film School and members of
the generation of the strong and unforgettable characters they
portray, chooses to depict the phenomenon from his or her own point
of view. The result is a fascinating social portrait of an era that,
a work about illusions and disillusionment and at times, about brief
moments of happiness.
